Announcement from the Implementation Panel

Announcement on the revision of the "MOTORCYCLES-FOUR-STROKE CYCLE GASOLINE ENGINE OILS(JASO T 903)IMPLEMENTATION MANUAL"(2023. 5)

We would like to inform you that the JASO engine oil standard implementation panel revised the on-file standard implementation manual according to the revision of " MOTORCYCLES-FOUR-STROKE CYCLE GASOLINE ENGINE Oil Standard (JASO T 903:2023)".

The significant changes in Standard and Application manual of the latest revision include:
(1) The changes of engine oil performance classification criteria :
As for the API standards documented in SAE J183, SG, SH standards were deleted, and SN PLUS, SP standards have been newly added.
In addition, the ILSAC and ACEA standards were deleted from the applicable engine oil specification categories because there was no record of T903:2016 on-file list.
(2) The revision of physicochemical properties :
Through the investigation of T903:2016 on-file oils listed in October 2019, the phosphorus specification has been changed from 0.08-0.12% to 0.08-0.10%.
In addition, the specification of evaporation loss has been changed from 20 mass% or less to 15 mass% or less, which is equivalent to other standards.
(3) The revision of the “Reference oil”, “Friction plate” and “Performance classification according to friction property indices” :
Since the manufacturer raised the supply issue of the reference oil (JAFRE-B16) used in the standard, alternative reference oil was investigated.
After the study, an alternative reference oil (JAFRE-B23) was selected in consideration of future availability and friction properties.
Moreover, since the friction plates used for the evaluation test were in limited supply, a modified alternative plat was selected for enhancing availability.
In accordance with the changes in the friction plate and reference oil (described above) for this test, the index performance criteria were also revised.
(4) The addition and revision of the effective period for standard conformity oil(This revised points is shown by the red.) :
Year of Issuance of the Standard First date when Classification Indication is allowed Last date when new filing is accepted Last date when on-filing is maintained
2011 October 1, 2011 September 30, 2016 April 30, 2021
2016 October 1, 2016 September 30, 2023 April 30, 2028
2023 October 1, 2023

Revision of “Automotive Diesel Engine Oil Standard (JASO M 355) Application manual” (2021.05)

The JASO Engine Oil Standards Implementation Panel revised "Automotive Diesel Engine Oil Standard (JASO M 355)Application manual" in accordance with the amendments of Automotive Diesel Engine Oil Standard(JASO M 355:2021).

The main points of the revision are as follows.

(1) Review of high temperature oxidation test :
As for ASTM D6984 (Sequence IIIF) and ASTM D7320 (Sequence IIIG) cited in this standard, for the reason the engine supply was stopped, API had been considered an alternative test method. Since the standard value using ASTM D8111 (Sequence IIIH) as an alternative test method was decided by API in 2019, it was examined whether it was appropriate as a quality certification for high temperature oxidation test of JASO M355 and was reviewed.
(2) Addition of the DL-2 classification :
A new classification DL-2 compatible with after-treatment devices was added. It was expanded sulfated ash standard value to ACEA C2, C3, and C5, while distinguishing it from the DL-1 standard, which specified a low sulfated ash content.
(3) On the Filing of an Oil conforming to the Standard,
the Effective Period of On-File,
and the Indication of Classification of the Standard :

*The on-file termination date for engine oils conforming to the JASO M 355: 2015 standard:
